Celebrating the Local, Negotiating the School:

Symposium on English Language and Literacy

in Aboriginal Communities

November 7-8, 2008

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Across Canada, Aboriginal students are graduating from high school, succeeding in postsecondary institutions, and negotiating the two worlds of local community and school.  Through funding provided by the Canadian Council on Learning and the Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre (ABLKC), we are hosting an invitational symposium that will explore how Aboriginal students negotiate the English  language in their schooling.  Specifically, the symposium will encourage dialogue between academics and practitioners on the nature and place of standard English and local variants in the school.

The symposium will include an opening reception on the evening of November 6, 2008 and a banquet on the evening of November 7 at the Radisson hotel.  Sessions will be held on November 7 and 8 at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.  Transportation to and from the park, nutrition breaks, and lunches will be provided. A more detailed agenda will be provided at a later date.
